Prof. Gary Cheung obtained his BDS in 1985, and an MDS in Conservative Dentistry (with distinctions) in 1987, both at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He went on his specialty training at the Eastman Dental Institute, and graduated with an MSc in Endodontics degree from the University of London in 1991. 

He completed his PhD study on the material science aspect of NITi instruments in 2006. He was promoted to full professorship in 2011, and is currently an Associate Dean of the Faculty, as well as the postgraduate programme director in Endodontics there.  A fellow of the RACDS, HKAM, AM(Singapore), and RCS Edinburgh, Prof. Cheung also serves as the Supervisor of Training in the specialty of Endodontics in Hong Kong. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and runs an intra-mural private practice on a referral basis.

He was elected as a Fellow to the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the Academy of Medicine of Hong Kong and that of Singapore, the International College of Dentists, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  Practicing in an intra-mural private practice on a referral basis, Dr. Cheung is currently Associate Professor and is in charge of the postgraduate programme in Endodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong.  He is currently Supervisor of Training of the Specialty Board in Endodontics of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong, and is a Visiting Professor to several stomatological colleges in China.
